All or Nothing Mentalities

"To me, the extraordinary aspect of martial arts lies in its simplicity. The easy way is also the right way, and martial arts is nothing at all special; the closer to the true way of martial arts, the less wastage of expression there is."
- Bruce Lee

Practicing discipline and self control are by far the hardest thing for most people to master. And why is that? I could chalk it up to pure human laziness or our perpetual need to feel special and march to the beat of our drum while smirking at the common folk but It's probably more so the latter, being perspective issue. The ability to practice discipline does not need to be as hard as we romanticize it out to be.

When someone trys to bring self control into their life, they  typically thrust themselves off the deep end into "over control".

The rational is this. I have no control, I need discipline thus I will put the pedal to the metal and straighten myself out immediately. There are two variables here that can be adjusted.

-- Time --

-- Degree of control --

Trying to bring change over Long periods of time while putting the pedal to the metal everyday results in a burn out that takes an equal amount of time to recover from

Even more so, trying to bring change in a short amount of time with too little or too much effort yields little to no results as the time period was not long enough.

There is healthy medium where degree of control and time are in sync and the organism can correctly adapt.

The Carbohydrate Monster Under your Bed Part 8

insulin resistance, carbohydrates fat, glycemic index, GI Index, insulin index, blood sugar spike
“We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light.”  - Plato

If you have not gotten chance to read the first 7 parts of this series, I strongly suggest you do so otherwise the rest of this material will not make as much sense as it should. For those of you who have been reading I realize this is getting tedious and at times redundant but there are so many counter points about this carbohydrate myth that require such painstaking explanation that they have become necessary and I dare say pivotal to clearing up this dogma.

Any who, Think of this series like a book. You don't just start reading the middle chapters unless your some type of weirdo...eh then again only a weirdo would dedicate hours of his or her time writing essays for no financial compensation. What the heck then, Start reading here if so choose. So to Cliff notes (gonna call it Carb Notes) the first 7 segments for you here we go:

Carb Notes (TM pending):
  • Many people are under the impression that carbohydrates are solely responsible for their adiposity ( i.e ther body fat)
  • They blame them so much that they read a bunch of books about "Carb Shaming" where the authors regurgitate the same "this is how you get fat and sick" logic over and over again.
  • The logic goes like this: Eat Bread -> Blood Sugar Rises -> Your Muscle cells Become "carb resistant" because of spiking your blood sugar over and over again and the Carbs subsequently get stored as fat.
  • What most people don't realize is that any form of macro-nutrient (i.e carb, fat or protein) can be stored as fat, with or without the actions of insulin
  • Diabetes is sign of lack of sugar in your cells and failure to thrive, not too much and "over thriving"

The Candida Hoax Part 2

"Man is a rational animal who always loses his temper when he is called upon to act in accordance with the dictates of reason." - Oscar Wilde

A lot of fuss has been made over the diagnosis more commonly handed out in the natural healing community known as candida overgrowth. It is the it "diagnosis" of the last couple years.

Thus, the reason I am writing about this yet again is because of all the posts on my blog, the one that has gotten the most views and attention is related to candida and the many symptoms it is associated with causing. Based on the traffic towards this page, I have decided for once to cater towards my readers/ future readers and expand upon my views on this diagnosis that gets so liberally tossed around like a throw pillow in a high rise Manhattan apartment.

First off, Is their Validity to these claims about candida and weight? How about the the evil toxins it produces that cause headaches, muscle aches, Acne, bad breath, brittle hair and nails, sluggishness fatigue and just an overall feeling of malice and garbage...do these really hold any weight?

The Carbohydrate Monster Under your Bed Part 7

Beta Cell Function, Amylin carbohydrates, Insulin resistance, protein misfolding, amylin protein misfolding, Carbohydrates and weight gain
Jaws Hates Carbs, loves People
"Destruction of the pancreatic beta cells results in decreased insulin production and manifests as type II diabetes, a condition that is characterized by excess extracellular glucose with an intracellular deficit"

In the last section we discussed a couple concepts and studies. The most notable being:
  • Increased Fatty acids in the plasma can lead to their subsequent storing in vital organs when beta oxidation has been "maxed out"
  • This overflow of fatty acids can inhibit glucose utilization and lead to lipo-toxicitiy
  • This impairment could then potentially lead to beta cell dysfunction and what we know as "Diabetes"
While all of this is important, I have to add in this section because I feel like it will become more relevant in future posts. This section is about a concept known as Protein mis-folding. Don't be afraid!! this concept is new to me as well so as usual I will go over the basics core concepts first and then lead into the studies and their various implications.

"People often ask me, 'Kenny, what are your weaknesses? Do you have any?' I would say that my biggest flaw, my achilles heel, is my tireless work ethic." - Kenny Powers

Do you feel like you are suffering the effects of metabolic damage? Is your healthy diet making you feel not so healthy?

You are not alone. You are among a collection of people who lost weight in a way that caused more harm than good and you are now feeling the repercussions. The weight is slowly creeping back up, the diets are becoming harder to follow etc but we will get into the symptoms later.

Much like you ,except about Three years ago, I had no idea that dieting could cause ANY harm. Call me naive at the time but it seemed like the majority of people I talked to had no clue that losing weight in a way that does not coincide with your bodies biological systems to maintain homeostasis can lead to some nasty symptoms and possible complications.

"Randomness means different things in various fields. Commonly, it means lack of pattern or predictability in events."

"Chaos - Complete disorder and confusion"

Embrace the chaos? What does that mean in this post? It doesn't mean chaos in the sense of anarchy ( Anarchy Burger... Hold the Government!), and it's not related to market volatility. What we are discussing here is the chaos of life. More specifically, the chaos of eating and stress and how it relates to our health and Overall Fitness.
